What Are Family Constellations?
Family Constellations is a powerful therapeutic approach developed by Bert Hellinger that delves into the hidden dynamics within family systems to address unresolved issues and restore harmony. At its core, this method operates on the premise that family members are deeply interconnected across generations, and their unresolved traumas, exclusions, or disruptions in order can unconsciously impact the lives of their descendants.
This approach draws from systemic and phenomenological principles, recognizing that love and belonging are the foundation of family systems. When these are disrupted—for example, through early deaths, estrangements, or injustices—later generations may unconsciously carry burdens or repeat patterns as a form of "invisible loyalty." Such entanglements can manifest as personal struggles, chronic illnesses, or relational difficulties.
The process of a Family Constellation typically unfolds in a group or individual setting. Participants or representatives are chosen to embody members of the family system, creating a spatial representation of the family’s dynamics. Through this embodied approach, hidden patterns and unresolved tensions surface, offering insights and pathways to resolution. The facilitator guides the process with deep respect for the family’s system, introducing healing movements or statements that honor excluded members and restore order.
The goal of Family Constellations is to re-establish the "Orders of Love," a term coined by Hellinger. These orders ensure that love flows naturally and appropriately across generations. When balance is restored, individuals often experience profound relief, greater clarity, and a sense of freedom to live their own lives fully.
This therapeutic approach is transformative not only for personal healing but also for understanding the collective forces that shape us, bridging the past and present in the service of future well-being.
